“CONTEMPORARY TRIBAL”

MARTHA STEPHENS, PAINTER

 JUNE 2-29, 2007

During the month of June at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea, on Hawai'i Island, the Waimea Arts Council presents Martha Stephens, painter.

The Kaha Ki’i Show will feature Martha, a Kealia, South Kona artist.   Martha Stephens at the age of  7, after finding out about abstract art and experiencing critical 3rd grade art  teachers, became bored and disenchanted with her realistic art and began making her first abstract pieces.  Experimenting with mediums, color, shape and line for decades she searches for answers to questions about the unknown in life in her work.  Always having a love of nature and environments she became a professional interior designer. She acquired a BS in Interior Design from San Jose State in California were she lived, made art and practiced design for most of her life.  Many of  her design clients are collectors of her work.   She also recently has incorporated Feng Shui into her practices. In 2004 Martha chose her permanent residence to be in Kealia, South Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii.  She considers the energy of this new island to be the most supportive for her work and life.  This body of her work is from primitive themes.   Martha says "Our past connects our future and we are all obviously connected.  Man first searched for the meaning in life and nature, with creation stories, ancestor worship and goddess worship, all having to do with nature.”

“This show addresses global spirituality and peace as we enter the age of man. and are one tribe”  Ultimately  Martha intends to cause people to think about their energy and what is basic and important in life.  “Acceptance of each other and focus on our inner being is the key of future life, living and peace in our world.”

A reception for the artist, friends and the public is scheduled for Saturday May 9, 2006, 3:00-5:00 p.m  The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is located in the old firehouse, the red building within the historic corner at the main stoplight and crossroads in Waimea.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the arts, the encouragement of artists, and the provision of a forum for art-related community events.  Membership is open to all artists and supporters of the arts.
